Hohenzieritz went down in history as the place where the legendary Queen Luise of Prussia died. The castle was once the summer residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Today, a memorial in the castle provides information about Queen Luise. One of the earliest landscape gardens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern extends behind the palace. It was created from 1771 by the English garden architect Thomson.

The starting point is the town of Friedland in the district of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. From there, the trail leads south to Neubrandenburg, on a western or eastern route around Lake Tollense, and ends in Mirow south of the Müritz. The stages are each about 13 to 20 kilometers long. Pilgrims can stay overnight in simple parsonages or private accommodations along the route. A list of accommodations and further information can be found on the pilgrimage trail website or at the Mecklenburg Lake District Tourist Board .
