Barlach's home town of Güstrow
Surprisingly diverse and a hub for culture and nature lovers
The silhouette of Güstrow's old town is shaped by the Renaissance castle, the cathedral and the parish church. From Gothic brickwork to Classicism, you can feel the flair of different epochs of cultural history.
The magnificent castle lends this charming residence town its very special attraction. The town museum, the Christmas Crib Exhibition in the Heilig Geist Church, diverse galleries, the Ernst-Barlach Theatre, snug cafés and picturesque courtyards make a visit to Güstrow a special cultural treat. Besides the beautiful, historical old town, the three Ernst Barlach museums are among the cultural highlights. Barlach's work "The Hovering Angel" in the cathedral has attained worldwide fame.
Experience bears, wolves, owls and many other animals up close in the MV Nature Park, and observe them also at night. Just round the corner, there are lots of leisure activities to be enjoyed at the family pleasure baths OASE. The adventure region of Inselsee with the Heidberg hills will wet your appetite for biking, paddling, swimming or taking a trip on a cutter.
Güstrow is one of the most beautiful towns in Mecklenburg and thanks to its central location, it is ideally suited as a point of departure for excursions into its attractive surroundings. The Baltic Sea and the state capital Schwerin can be quickly reached. The long-distance cycle path Berlin-Copenhagen leads directly through the old town.
Using Güstrow as a base in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Güstrow is wonderfully positioned as a place to set up home for a week or two while exploring the wider region. The coast is just an hour away by car, and is excellent for invigorating walks along the Baltic Coast. Just be sure to stop at a traditional guest house along the way for a hearty dish of local seafood and locally-brewed beer. Or choose between the lakes at Mecklenburgische Schweiz and the chain of forests starting at Dobbertiner Seen for an adventure in the wild. Unwind and tune into your surroundings, as you hike, cycle or drive through breathtaking nature.
Historical and modern, dynamic and yet tranquil - that is Güstrow. Guests are always heartily welcome. We look forward to welcoming you!
