The city library has a varied history. It was founded in 1922. The first predecessor existed as early as 1863. Today, Schwerin City Library is a modern library under municipal sponsorship.
The main branch in the Schweriner Höfe and the district libraries in Lankow and Neu Zippendorf have a total stock of around 120,000 media.

Founded in 2012, the "Freundeskreis der Stadtbibliothek e.V." is committed to promoting reading and developing media skills, especially among children and young people.
