The Mecklenburg Foundation preserves and tells the history and culture of Mecklenburg!

Since its establishment in 1973, the Mecklenburg Foundation has amassed a wide-ranging collection of Mecklenburgica and presented it in exhibitions, publications and events on the culture and history of Mecklenburg. Touring exhibitions, lectures, readings, and projects for the cultivation of Low German are also among the offerings of the Mecklenburg Foundation. The work of the foundation is supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Mecklenburg Foundation presents the most beautiful and interesting pieces of its collection in the permanent exhibition Mecklenburg - so far, so near under the motto "In one hour through 300 years of Mecklenburg history" in the Schleswig-Holstein-Haus.

Grand ducal stable for sick horses

The former Grand Ducal Stables were built around 1850 as a separate utility building from the Marstall opposite, which was completed in 1842. In addition to the care areas for the horses, the building also housed apartments for the vets and animal keepers. With its simple, late classicist façade, it adjoins the stable building.

Villas on Werderstrasse

Annastrasse in Schwerin, built between 1862 and 1866, presents a series of neo-Renaissance villas that served as residences for aristocratic families and wealthy citizens. The picturesque façades are based on the formal language of the residential palace and feature spacious courtyards and elegant conservatories.

Grand ducal office building

The monumental administration building is located to the northwest of the old town, directly on the Pfaffenteich lake. The building was erected when the Grand Ducal administration moved from Ludwigslust to Schwerin between 1842 and 1845.

Grand ducal linen and bed chamber

  • Großer Moor, 19055 Schwerin

On behalf of the Grand Duke, architect Hermann Willebrand created the designs for a linen room. In 1878, after the demolition of the previous building, this was supplemented by the construction of a "bed chamber". Willebrand unified both components with a uniform design and a simple classical plaster façade.

Old artillery barracks

  • Johannes Stelling Straße, 19053 Schwerin

The artillery barracks in Schwerin, built between 1856 and 1861, represent the style of medieval fortress buildings and are a striking example of 19th century military architecture. Its exposed location on Ostorfer Berg and the architectural design underline the political stability of the monarchy at a time of social upheaval.
