Experience the North Cape of Germany

Cape Arkona rises majestically in the äußfirst north of the island of Rügen and delights visitors with an impressive combination of rugged nature and historic architecture. The entire area is a landmark of national importance and combines landscape, history and culture in a unique way. The steep chalk cliffs, the sweeping panorama across the Baltic Sea and the historic lighthouses create a backdrop that is second to none.

The journey to this magical place is an experience in itself: a quiet road surrounded by fields and meadows leads into the seclusion of the Wittow peninsula. Once you reach your destination, another special aspect awaits: Cape Arkona is car-free. Visitors can explore the sights and unspoiled nature on foot, by bike, on the popular Arkona Railway or even by horse-drawn carriage.

Experience the Lands End

Cape Arkona, often referred to as the „North Cape of Germany“, fascinates with its dramatic cliffs and a view that is second to none. The chalk cliffs, up to 45 meters high, form an impressive backdrop that combines with the glittering waves of the Baltic Sea to create a panorama that captivates hikers and nature lovers alike. The highest point offers a fantastic view over the Wittow peninsula and, on a clear day, even as far as the Danish coast.

The cliffs at Cape Arkona are not only a geological masterpiece, but also a unique habitat for rare plants and animals. The contrast between the white chalk cliffs and the lush green of nature that spreads out along the coast is particularly impressive. No wonder this place is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Germany.

Lighting for perfect photo motifs

Cape Arkona, the northernmost cape on the island of Rügen, is famous for its two historic lighthouses, which tower over the Baltic Sea like silent watchmen. The two towers - the Old and the New Lighthouse - tell the story of over a century of seafaring and are now landmarks of the region. The older of the two, a simple brick tower, was built in 1826 according to the plans of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, making it the oldest lighthouse on the Baltic coast. It rises 19 meters into the sky and was powered by a coal fire before it was later electrified.

The new lighthouse, an imposing structure made of red bricks, was built in 1905 and, at 35 meters, is almost twice as high as its predecessor. It replaced the old lighthouse as the primary source of light for shipping and, at a height of around 75 meters above sea level, offers an impressive range of up to 22 nautical miles. Visitors have the opportunity to climb both towers and enjoy the breathtaking view of the steep coastal cliffs and the vastness of the Baltic Sea.

In addition to the lighthouses, there is also the former naval sounding tower, which was once used for navigation and is now used as a viewing platform and exhibition space. Together, the three towers form a charming ensemble that brings the maritime history of Cape Arkona to life and takes visitors on a journey into the past.

Discover the quaint fishing village of Vitt

Not far from the imposing cliffs of Cape Arkona lies the picturesque fishing village of Vitt, which looks like a relic from another era with its thatched houses and winding alleyways. Nestled in a small bay and protected from the rough winds of the Baltic Sea, Vitt gives an impression of the original life of the fishermen, which has been maintained here for centuries. The village consists of almost 30 houses, which are built in the traditional style of wood and clay and are listed buildings. This special atmosphere makes Vitt one of the most beautiful and best-preserved fishing villages on Rügen.

A highlight of the village is the small, octagonal chapel, which was built in the 19th century for the fishermen and their families. The simple, white chapel sits enthroned above the bay and offers a peaceful place of contemplation with a view of the sea. It is still used today for church services and weddings.

A walk along the coast between Vitt and Cape Arkona is particularly worthwhile, as the path offers spectacular views of the sea and the chalk cliffs. The fishermen in the village still sell fresh fish, and small snack bars and cafés offer local specialties. Vitt is a charming destination for anyone who wants to experience authentic coastal romance and a peaceful atmosphere away from the main tourist routes.
