...and then we went to the Baltic Sea. GDR history in a conversation between the generations
The perspective of ordinary people
The traveling exhibition "...und dann sind wir an die Baltic Sea gefahren. GDR history in conversation between the generations" provides answers to the question of how East German families across four generations talk about the GDR and how experiences of dictatorship are dealt with and, for example, how adaptation and opposition are remembered.
In this exhibition, six families are personally introduced with photos and quotes. This is followed by anonymized quotes from the interviews of all 16 families involved in the interview project, which illustrate the range of current assessments of life in the GDR. The exhibition reveals differentiated images of experienced history in the synopsis of the experience of dictatorship and the living environment.
It can serve as a basis for today's discussion of GDR history in school (history and social studies lessons).
