Jaqueline and Clotaire come from different worlds, she from a middle-class intellectual family, he from a family of dock workers. She abhors violence, for him it is part of his life and an expression of his unbridled temperament. She wants to learn and achieve something, allowing herself to drift in a no-future life. Nevertheless, sparks fly right from their first meeting, when they are still teenagers. He loiters around outside school with his gang chatting up girls. She is the new girl and stands up to him. From the very first images,
is swept away by the aggressive drive of gang crime, with the wildly determined young men driving black limousines in a parking garage and grabbing weapons from one of the trunks.
As a love story that unfolds both musically and violently, Lellouche describes his film "Beating Hearts" as being torn between the elemental force of love and crime. With immediate intensity, the film is always romantic and tragic at the same time, defying all the usual clichés. In fact, it revolves around all manifestations of love, that of parents, the first great pulsating, all-consuming love of youth, the sensible love with which one tries to come to terms with a broken heart, the caring love of a worried father and even the love between friends. Lellouche has created a film here that, with its exclusive vitality and inventive esprit, echoes the wild, early films of Beineix and Carax.
