Guests interested in history will find an authentic structure of Stone Age society on the L22 road about one kilometer east of the Baltic resort of Rerik: the Großdolmen Gaarzer Hof.
The megalithic tomb, which probably dates from 3000 B.C., was uncovered in the course of a research project in the 1960s under the direction of Professor Ewald Schuldt, together with about 100 others. It consists of an oval chamber formed by upright blocks of rock, accessible through the narrow side, which was originally mounded over.
The chamber measures five by two meters, with aisle 7.5 meters, and is about 1.50 meters high. Its floor is covered with sandstone slabs and burnt flint pieces. Within the chamber, individual segments are divided, in which shards and other grave goods have been found. A special find from this megalithic tomb, a vessel with eye-shaped representations, is kept in the Schwerin State Archaeological Museum.
The megalithic tombs are among the oldest human structures in our landscape that are still preserved. Here you can find one of eight unique ground monuments from the region around Rerik. Originally, the burial chambers were covered with earth and stone fillings, so that mounds were formed. There are information boards for the guests. On Tuesdays from May to September there are also regular guided tours of the megalithic tombs.
