Chopin - Debussy - Liszt
One musician, one instrument, 28 composers: Festival prizewinner and jack-of-all-trades Kit Armstrong travels with the audience through the ages. Whether attending one or all five of the concerts he presents, the world of piano literature opens up in a completely new way through the eyes of this curious and enthusiastic virtuoso extraordinaire.
Visions played a major role in music between 1820 and 1920: from the nocturnal dream images of Frédéric Chopin or Gabriel Fauré to Franz Liszt's works that transcend all boundaries of piano technique and thus touch on the supernatural, to Claude Debussy's impressionistic sound paintings. Arnold Schönberg's emancipation of dissonance is not only the culmination of late Romantic tendencies, which are already apparent in Liszt and Debussy, but also a vision of its own. Leo Ornstein's piece "Suicide in an Airplane", with which Kit Armstrong concludes this fourth part of the "Five Centuries of Piano Music" series, finally seems to unite the achievements of Liszt and Schoenberg.
