Experience "Die Dreigroschenoper" at one of the most unusual venues in classical theater, St. George's Church in Wismar.
The Threepenny Opera, premiered in 1928 and based on the 200-year-old original The Beggars Opera by John Gray (1728), tells the story of gang leader MacHeath (Mackie Messer) in three acts, who narrowly escapes the threat of death by gallows and only because of his relationship with the chief of police. The play is set in London's notorious Soho district in the 18th century and begins at a fairground. There, a morality tale singer sings Mackie Messer's morality tale, in which the gang leader's misdeeds are presented.
He in turn marries the daughter of the beggar king Peachum, who controls the pity business. When he finds out about his daughter's marriage to Mackie Messer, he decides to hand the unloved crook over to the police.
He flees to a brothel, is betrayed by an ex-lover and arrested. In prison, he is visited by the police chief's daughter, whom he manages to persuade to help him escape.
Back on the loose, Mackie finds shelter with another lover, but he is betrayed again, arrested and sentenced to death.
Shortly before his execution, Chief of Police Brown appears as a royal messenger on horseback and announces not only Mackie's pardon, but also his elevation to the peerage.
