Ludwig Frankmar, baroque cello Monophonic music by masters of polyphony
Behind the 'Ricercate sopra il Violoncello', published in Bologna in 1687, is an organist named Giovanni Battista Degli Antonii. His grandiose ricercate movements, most of which are meticulously worked out around prime number structures, are relics from the early days of the cello, when for a short time it looked as if solo cello music would develop in a completely different direction. Marin Marais was the Sun King's sologambist. He wrote music that followed the works of his teacher Jean-Baptiste Lully, to whom his first viola da gamba book, published in 1686, was dedicated. With more than 6,000 surviving compositions, Georg Philipp Telemann's oeuvre cannot be contained. It spans all genres and styles. The viol fantasias were considered lost until they were rediscovered in 2015.
