The Bug was a restricted military area for almost 80 years. The imperial fleet built a base for its naval pilots on the headland during World War I. The area was also used by the German Air Force. After the Treaty of Versailles, the Bug had to be demilitarized for a short time, and the civil service union let its members recharge their batteries in a rest home. But the Nazis soon put an end to this brief interlude and used the remote stretch of land for their plans for secret air armament. Seaplanes took off from here to hunt U-boats and were involved in dramatic rescue operations in the closing stages of World War II. After the facilities were dismantled by the Soviet Union, the National People's Army stationed a naval unit that was also frequently in "enemy contact" with ships of the German Navy during the Cold War.
Today, the scenic southern tip of the peninsula is part of the National Park of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, and a vacation paradise with a marina is to be built on the northern bow.
The author reveals secrets that surround the headland to this day. He describes what happened during the stormy decades of the 20th century and illustrates everyday life in this secret place in unique photos and documents.
