3rd Summer Art Evening "Güstrow Front Doors"
Front doors are like a calling card: they bear witness to the wealth and self-image of the builder or homeowner. Over the centuries, front doors have evolved with the different architectural styles. They were and are exposed to wind and weather and have been renewed and replaced not only for this reason, but also in line with changing fashions. Güstrow's old town has a large number of historic front doors. Doors from the Baroque period through to Art Nouveau and the New Objectivity of the 1920s have been preserved to this day. One focus, however, is on classicism, which was to shape Güstrow's bourgeois townscape in the decades around and after 1800 right up to the present day.
The "Young Restorers" working group, which was set up by Dr. Hans Jürgen Klug at the former "John Brinckman" secondary school, was already dedicated to preserving these special architectural treasures during the GDR era. Here, dedicated young people worked under expert guidance to preserve the evidence of craftsmanship from earlier eras. At the time, their work was widely reported in the newspapers and magazines of the GDR, as well as on television and in documentary films.
The 3rd Summer Art Evening on Friday, July 4, 2025, starting at 6 p.m., is dedicated to Güstrow's historic front doors and the commitment to their preservation. The event is organized by the Museum of the City of Güstrow together with the Kunst- und Altertumsverein Güstrow e.V., the Urban Development Office of the Barlachstadt, "Inselliebe", the Filmklub Güstrow e.V. and GüstrowTV.
You can look forward to a multi-part program: The meeting point is at 6 p.m. in the museum for the opening of a small exhibition on the subject of "Güstrow front doors", which will show testimonies from the museum's collections. This will be followed by a tour of the old town, during which selected examples will be presented. The tour ends in the courtyard of the "Inselliebe" at Domstraße 2, where the documentary film "Die Tür" (The Door), shot by Konrad Weiß in 1978, will be shown at around 8.30 p.m. The film captures the work of the door restoration working group and life in Güstrow's old town in the 1970s in impressive images and statements. The film also documents the restoration of the rococo front door of the house at Domstraße 2.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with some of those involved in the restoration of the doors and the film's director. The evening will be rounded off with a convivial get-together with catering in the picturesque courtyard of "Inselliebe".
