Film of the Evangelical Lutheran Church District of Mecklenburg
BRIEF CONTENT
:In 1935, shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the young teacher Antoni Benaiges takes over the elementary school of a small, remote village in the province of Burgos. Thanks to his progressive, anti-authoritarian teaching methods, he quickly builds up a trusting relationship with his class. But his friendly approach to the children is viewed with suspicion by parents and village leaders.
75 years later, in 2010, Ariadna, the granddaughter of one of his former pupils, is searching for the remains of her great-grandfather, who went missing in the civil war. She comes across the moving story of Antoni Benaiges and discovers how much resistance this charismatic man had to overcome.
Ariadna's character is representative of many families in Spain who are still searching for the whereabouts of their missing relatives from 1936. The story of Antoni Benaiges is a tribute to the many Republican teachers who were executed in the course of the systematic eradication of the progressive education system by Franco's policies during the coup in July 1936
. With these two storylines on different time levels, the film interweaves the past with the present and uses this story based on true events to show how important it is not to allow the memory of our recent history to be forgotten. A demand that is more relevant today than ever.
