"Mottche Spinkus un de Pelz" by John Brinckmann, which is set in the Jewish milieu of the small town of Güstrow in the first half of the 19th century
"Mottche Spinkus un de Pelz" - John Brinckmann's novellistic masterpiece - a musical reading with Wolfgang Rieck
The Mecklenburg singer and songwriter Wolfgang Rieck has felt
very committed to the artistic and literary tradition of his North German homeland since the beginning of his musical career. He is particularly fond of the work of the Rostock writer John Brinckmann, who stood - undeservedly - in the shadow of his fellow writers Fritz Reuter and Klaus Groth throughout his life.
Following a musical reading from the magnificent sailor's yarn "Peter Lurenz bi Abukir", Wolfgang Rieck has now added John Brinckmann's Low German story "Mottche Spinkus un de Pelz", which is set in the Jewish milieu of the small town of Güstrow in the first half of the 19th century, to his artistic reading repertoire.
It is the extremely funny story of the old, thrifty Jew who can't stop hustling. Kurt Batt, one of the editors of Brinckmann's works at Hinstorff-Verlag, writes about it:
'This most artful piece of prose ever written in Low German,..., this novella takes no notice of religious or racial prejudices at all, because it playfully and humorously dissolves the "otherness" and contains neither sentimentality nor affronts.
The matter-of-factness with which Brinckmann portrays his Jewish fellow citizens is the ethos of the work.
At breathtaking speed, linguistic passages switch from Yiddish-tinged High German to Low German and small-town High German - a real challenge not only for the performer!
An extraordinarily entertaining novella that strains the audience's laugh muscles.
The story will be accompanied by Low German and High German songs from the author's own pen or based on texts by other authors.
