The history of the Gamehl manor house has been linked to the history of the Stralendorff family since 1386. It all probably began with a small defensive tower on the small island in the lake at the time of the conquest of Mecklenburg by Henry the Lion (1129-1195). Ulrich Josua v.Stralendorff had a single-storey house built in a baroque estate dating from 1711. In 1860, the district administrator Franz v. Stralendorff commissioned the Wismar architect H.G. Thormann to build the present manor house in the neo-Gothic style.
Gamehl was and remained the ancestral seat and center of the family for over 600 years without interruption, with the exception of the GDR era. Gamehl Castle was reacquired in 2000 by Georg v. Wallis and Dagmar v. Stralendorff-v. Wallis in 2000 and painstakingly restored. Great importance was attached to restoring the brick building and its interiors to their original structure with all the characteristic stylistic elements and in the original shapes and colors.
