Pianist Kirill Gerstein's roots combine the traditions of Russian, American and Central European music-making with his insatiable curiosity. These qualities and the relationships he has built with orchestras, conductors, instrumentalists, singers and composers have led him to explore both new and old repertoire. From Bach to Adès, Gerstein's playing is characterized by a clarity of expression, distinctive intelligence and virtuosity, as well as an energetic, imaginative musical presence that has brought him to the top of his field and continues to do so. Gerstein, who was born in the former Soviet Union, is an American citizen and lives in Berlin. He regularly performs worldwide with the "Who's Who" of orchestras: Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Vienna, Los Angeles, New York, St. Petersburg, Czech, Munich and Rotterdam Philharmonics, London and Chicago, Boston and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Dresden and Berlin State Orchestras, Munich Philharmonic, NDR Symphony Orchestra, SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden, Dresden and Berlin State Orchestras.
He first worked with the label i myrios classics in 2010 and has been able to realize many projects as part of this partnership, which has now lasted over 12 years, including Mozart's four-hand piano sonatas, Strauss' Enoch Arden with the late Bruno Ganz and "The Gershwin Moment" with the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. The 2020 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the world premiere of Adès' Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, written especially for Gerstein, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra won the 2020 Gramophone Award and was nominated for three GRAMMY Awards. of a musician's life, is currently Professor of Piano at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin and a lecturer at Kronberg Academy.
Kirill Gerstein was born in 1979 in Voronezh, Russia. He attended one of the country's special music schools for gifted children and taught himself to play jazz by listening to his parents' record collection. After a chance encounter with jazz legend Gary Burton in St. Petersburg when he was 14 years old, he was invited to be the youngest student at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied jazz piano alongside his classical piano studies. At the age of 16, Gerstein decided to concentrate on classical music and completed his studies with Solomon Mikowsky at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, followed by further studies with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid and Ferenc Rados in Budapest. Gerstein is the sixth winner of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award, first prize winner of the 10th Arthur Rubinstein Competition and holder of an Avery Fisher Career Grant.
