CHARITY CONCERT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE STRALSUND CHILDREN'S HOSPICE
Johann Sebastian Bach's works are among the most frequently performed pieces of classical music in the world. In 2025, the music world will commemorate the 340th anniversary of Bach's birth on March 21 and the 275th anniversary of his death on July 28.
The High Mass in B minor BWV 232 was composed in 1748/1749 shortly before Bach's death as perhaps his greatest, but certainly his greatest sacred composition. The most important Protestant composer created a great Catholic mass that still unites people in its music today. The musical spectrum ranges from magnificently scored eight-part choral movements accompanied by an orchestra to magnificent solo arias and touching moments of chamber music.
Bach had already dedicated the Kyrie and Gloria of the work to the Catholic court in Dresden in 1733, but it was not until 1736 that he was awarded the title of court composer. The expansion into a large solemn mass setting dates from 1748/49.
In 2015, the manuscript of the Mass in B minor was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The proceeds from the concert will go to the children's hospice Leuchtturm project in Stralsund.
