On Saturday, 28.09.2024, 5 p.m. the Bergen Gospel Choir and the Berlin the Berlin Paul Robeson Choir will give a concert in the Evangelical Church St. Marien in Bergen. The program includes spirituals, gospels and jazz.
As the Paul Robeson Choir and the Gospel Choir of St. Mary's have a similar repertoire, the distance between Bergen and Berlin is no obstacle. So the two choirs have decided to give a joint concert. The concert summer ends in Bergen on 18.09.2024, so their concert on 28.09.2024 is intended as a musical dessert.
The gospel choir of St. Mary's is well known to music lovers on Rügen. It provides music for church services and takes part in music projects in schools. Its repertoire ranges from traditional to modern gospels and spirituals as well as world music. The choir was founded in 2000 and has been led by cantor Frank Thomas since 2001. Today, 25 singers belong to the four-part choir. Barbara Klatte conducts the joint concert in St. Marien.
The Berlin choir, which bears the name of the African-American singer, actor and civil rights activist Paul Robeson, presents spirituals, gospels, jazz as well as American and African folk songs in St. Marien. Spirituals are one of the main focuses of the choir's repertoire. Paul Robeson (1898 - 1976) described them as the soul of his people. Some spirituals such as "We are climbing Jacob's ladder" or "Deep river" were sung by Paul Robeson himself. The musical direction of the concert is in the hands of Joachim Kuipers.
Today, over 40 singers belong to the Paul Robeson Choir. By cultivating the musical legacy of its namesake, the choir also identifies with his worldwide commitment to peace and justice.
