One of the most beautiful excursions in the area surrounding the royal seat is to the "Serrahner Buchenwälder" World Heritage Site. Start this tour in what is probably the most unspoiled part of the Müritz National Park at the town harbor of the residential town of Neustrelitz. Beech forests once shaped the landscape in Central Europe. Today, the old beech forests of Serrahn are among the few remaining examples of this original vegetation. A 244-hectare section is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As a game preserve of the Dukes of Strelitz and a nature reserve, the Serrahn forests have remained untouched for centuries. Since the establishment of the Müritz National Park in 1990, they have been left to their natural dynamics. Cranes, sea eagles and ospreys breed in the forest and water-rich landscape, while fungi and insects find plenty of dead wood in the natural forests, providing a habitat that has become rare. The "Richness of ancient beech forests" hike is a varied tour through different forest areas at any time of year and is particularly suitable for families. Along the way, there are observation tips on the moor footbridge, a viewing tower and lots of information. In the forester's lodge, the multimedia exhibition "In the realm of beech trees" familiarizes visitors with the World Heritage Site.
