Full speed ahead with solar energy! On Thursday, July 17, the Hanseatic City of Stralsund cordially invites you to this year's solar boat race at the Green Farm on Arnold-Zweig-Straße in Knieper West.
On July 17, 2025, the site will become a stage for around 80 solar boats built by pupils from primary and secondary schools. The solar boats will "swim" against each other in a large water basin.
The starting signal is given at 2 pm.
The boats are created by the children and young people themselves - often creatively made from everyday materials in the spirit of upcycling: polystyrene, plastic bottles, CD covers or wood scraps can be seen as well as parts from the craft cupboard or toy box. It is important that the boat floats, is stable and carries a solar panel. Prizes are awarded not only to the fastest boats, but also to the most beautiful ones. Teamwork, technical skills and imagination are required.
The traditional race has been taking place in Stralsund since 2016, always in the wake of the "Renewable Energy Day". In 2025, the sun boats will start outside the old town in the Knieper West district for the first time. The Green Farm offers an ideal location for a versatile and sustainable outdoor school and technology project. Should the sun take a break, a spotlight will provide the necessary power.
In addition to the race, guests can expect a colorful supporting program: The Royal Rangers invite you to take part in various scouting activities, the environmental library is on site with a solar cookie baking machine, and the popular Green Farm café is open to everyone. THE highlight for many gardening enthusiasts will be the presentation of a school garden robot. Equipped with tools for various gardening tasks, the robot takes on many tasks independently. Weed removal, for example, is carried out via automated plant monitoring. The system is controlled via an app. The technical basis goes back to a Californian start-up, but was adapted and further developed to meet the company's own requirements as part of a project. The event is aimed not only at young inventors, but also at anyone interested in creative, sustainable technology and the diversity of life in the district.
