Open Monument Day Schwerin

The German Foundation for Monument Protection announced the main theme for Germany's largest cultural event, which it coordinates nationwide: "Wahr-Zeichen. Witnesses to history" is the motto for the Open Monument Day in 2024.

"I saw it with my own eyes!" - this sentence emphasizes the importance of our senses for the perception of truth. But what if we can no longer trust them? How do we distinguish fake news from real facts when artificial intelligence can generate deceptively real images, sounds and videos? In contrast to the trend towards manipulation, monuments remain reliable and alive as stone witnesses to the past - even centuries later. They are valuable carriers of history that can preserve inconvenient truths and refute false theories.
