Three Edinburghers on the Baltic Sea beach
For Dave Gilfillan, band leader of the trio North Sea Gas, "Caledonia" is the most popular Scottish folk song. It is often requested at concerts, perhaps also on July 9, 8 p.m., in the Klostergarten in Rostock). But the love song "Fear A'Batha" or the song "Johnny Cope", which the rebellious Jacobites put to flight as British commander-in-chief in 1745, can also be heard again and again. "Our aim has always been to provide entertainment based on Scottish folk tradition," says Gilfillan. After many tours in North America, they now concentrate mainly on the UK and Germany. Dave Gilfillan, founder of the band in 1980, plays guitar, banjo and bodrhan. Grant Simpson (fiddle and guitar) and Ronnie MacDonald (guitar, bouzouki) complete the trio. In 44 years, North Sea Gas has changed personnel many times, but the current line-up has existed since 2006 and the trio still has big plans. They hope to record their 23rd album this year. It would be the fourth live album since the ensemble was founded. If everything goes according to plan, the musicians want to present it during the summer tour.
