Literary Symposium

Today, the Moomins and their neighbors and friends are not only omnipresent in Finland. When Tove Jansson first introduced the world of the Moomins to the book market 80 years ago, it was hardly foreseeable that she had created a worldwide success. Tove Jansson's supposedly children's books invite us to read them with a view to current events. The Moomin Valley is by no means a paradise, but rather a place full of diffuse challenges. During the conference, together with experts, we want to explore the ways in which resilience is narrated, prepared and contextualized in the books. How do the characters deal with natural disasters, external threats, despots and losses? How does Jansson portray her characters and their world as resilient?
