Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Literature Prize 2024

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Literature Prize is being awarded for the sixth time. The prize recognizes and supports the outstanding literary work of authors in and from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A three-member jury of experts will select up to five authors based on anonymous submissions, who will read as finalists on October 12, 2024 at the STRAZE culture and initiative house in Greifswald and via livestream. The winner of the prize will be announced during the event. In addition to the jury prize, two audience prizes will be awarded.

Organization and funding

The competition and award ceremony take place every two years. The organizers are the Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop, the Literaturhaus Rostock, the Literaturzentrum Vorpommern in the Koeppenhaus in Greifswald, Risse - Zeitschrift für Literatur in Mecklenburg und Vorpommern and the LiteraturRat MV e. V. By awarding the prize in Greifswald, the organizing team makes explicit reference to the anniversary year in honour of the painter Caspar David Friedrich, who was born here 250 years ago. The prize is sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald.

The main prize

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Literature Prize includes a one-month residency at Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop in October 2025 with a grant of 3,000 euros (subject to state funding) as well as several readings at literary institutions in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2025. The text awarded by the jury will be published in an anthology together with the finalists' texts

The audience prizes

In addition to the jury prize, two audience prizes will be awarded: the hall prize and the online prize. The audience will vote for the winners in person or online after the finalists' public reading on October 12, 2024. The audience prizes are endowed with 500 euros each

How to apply

Writers aged 18 and over who live in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, who grew up or were born in MV or who have lived, studied or worked in MV for at least three years are eligible to apply. Prose, drama and poetry will be considered.

• up to 10 pages of text (DIN A4) from the fields of prose , drama, poetry

• a short biography (max. half a page),

• Picture books and children's literature as well as texts that have already appeared as independent publications (e.g. as a collection of stories, novels or poetry) areexcluded.
• Texts or text excerpts that have already appeared on the Internet, in anthologies or literary magazines or have been performed on reading stages areeligible.
• In the case of a postal application, the text must be submitted in quadruplicate and an e-mail address or telephone number must be stated separately in the cover letter.
