The legacy of 19th century Low German emigrants. A lecture by Ulrike Stern.
When people leave their homeland, they also take their language and culture, their values and traditions with them.
For example, emigration from Mecklenburg and Pomerania in the 19th century is the reason why Low German language islands can still be found in the USA and Brazil today.
In her lecture, cultural scientist Ulrike Stern will summarize the historical and linguistic background, but will also present current examples that she has collected on two trips to Brazil. As a member of staff at the Competence Center for Low German Didactics at the University of Greifswald, she is part of a network of German and Brazilian academics working on the preservation and teaching of Low German. In some southern states of Brazil, the Low German variety Pomerano (Pommersch) is recognized as a second official language and is used as a family language, so that common questions and goals arise.
The lecture, a search for traces using visual and audio material, is part of the "Mobility" theme year initiated by the MV Regional History Round Table.
