Lecture on the origins and current use of chalk
Two rocks that could not be more different: white and black - soft and hard define the rocks of the Rügen coast: chalk and flint. In the lecture by Thomas Fitzke, former director of the chalk museum on Rügen, everything revolves around the white gold of Rügen, the chalk.
The speaker will cover everything from the formation of the Rügen chalk around 70 million years ago in the Upper Cretaceous to its pressing and uplifting during the Weichselian cold period and industrial mining for more than two centuries. The fascination of the chalk fossils is just as important as reading and understanding the natural and anthropogenic landscape history.
The lecture is part of the program accompanying the current special exhibition "Eugen Geinitz - Exploring the Ice Age Landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern".
Anyone interested is cordially invited to immerse themselves in the ice age research of the past and present on this day.
The lecture is free of charge, a donation is requested.
