The famous novella by Günter Grass in an intense text-music experience
"The Tin Drum" by Günter Grass
Devid Striesow, recitation
Stefan Weinzierl, percussion
Günter Grass dissects five decades of German history in his novel of the century, reconstructing a lost world and at the same time pointing out its path to the abyss with an almost infinite love of storytelling, baroque linguistic power, caustic wit and unparalleled descriptive fury.
"The Tin Drum" (1959) has been adapted for the stage numerous times. However, no one has come up with the most obvious idea of "drumming up" the novel. Until now! Because now the percussionist Stefan Weinzierl has taken up the cause and turned the novel into a spectacle for voice and percussion. With the multifaceted timbres of vibraphone, marimba, percussion and live electronics, Grass' novel can once again be discovered in a completely new way. Percussionist Stefan Weinzierl has found a congenial counterpart in actor Devid Striesow as narrator. Together they create an intense text-music experience whose message is more relevant than ever.
The content of the novel:
While still in the womb, the main character of the novel, Oskar Matzerath, recognizes the world as a universal disaster into which he does not even want to be born. Only the Tin Drum, promised by his mother for his third birthday, offers him an acceptable prospect of survival: a life as an artist. So at the age of three, Oskar decides to stop growing and instead to observe and drum. He describes the rise of fascism from the frog's perspective, linking private history with contemporary history.
The novel by Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass is still considered a milestone and one of the most widely read novels in German history.
