Gertrud and Emil Kalluweit have left to create their own existence in the conquered Polish territories. But after their arrival in their new homeland, they experience the horror of the deportations and murder all around them. While Kalluweit tries to suppress his burgeoning horror, Gertrud takes in a little Jewish girl, regardless of the danger. Meanwhile, the German leadership in the Gouvernement, which included Lesstorff, indiscriminately slaughtered civilians in order to stifle any resistance. Emil Kalluweit is urged by SS man Schneider to join the firing squads. The request plunges him into a desperate conflict. But Schneider will not leave him alone and the authorities begin to investigate the child's origins. When Gertrud goes away for a few days, her husband wants to take the girl away secretly. Gertrud sees only one way to save the Jewish girl. She turns to Lesstorff for the papers. Resigned, Kalluweit agrees to Gertrud adopting the little girl together with a Polish boy. He then volunteers for the front. At the same time, Willi Heyer, a German communist, manages to escape from the concentration camp with a Polish professor. (Text: MDR)
