After the war is finally over, Gertrud and Heyer meet again. Exhausted to death from the lonely march through the icy, devastated landscape, Gertrud has finally reached her home village. With her two children and an infant she has picked up on the way, she finds shelter in her mother's once despised day laborer's cottage. Now her children are in danger of dying of malnutrition and exhaustion. Willi Heyer, who has been appointed mayor of the village by the occupying forces, confiscates the cows from the large farmers to alleviate the misery. Lesstorff returns from captivity as a prisoner of war. He asks Gertrud to move back in with him. But Gertrud, knowing full well that Lesstorff's wish is merely the sober calculation of the new balance of power, refuses the offer. She only goes to the Lesstorff farm to work. There she runs into the former SS man Schneider, who is given shelter by Lesstorff on the recommendation of old comrades. Schneider threatens and harasses Gertrud, whereupon she tries to run away with her children. On the way, she meets Willi Heyer, who persuades her to turn back. When they arrive in the village together, the mob is already raging in the mayor's office, incited by SS Schneider and the big farmers. Lesstorff dies in the melee from a shot fired from Schneider's gun. The farm is expropriated and divided up, but Gertrud has sworn never again to accept other people's land. (Text: MDR)
