Author reading with Prof. Reinhard Bach
Caspar David Friedrich and Ernst Moritz Arndt were close friends and contemporaries of a social upheaval, the dimensions of which seem almost unforeseeable from today's perspective. At the center of the social and political upheavals of their time is the French Revolution, which began in 1789 and continued in a whole cascade of political upheavals until Napoleon seized power in 1799. In his latest book, the Greifswald Romance scholar Reinhard Bach explores the question of what vocation Caspar David Friedrich and Ernst Moritz Arndt saw as their own in a turning point in the world in which they were placed and in which they had to find an inner compass for themselves and many who followed them spiritually.
