Lecture & Science

Lecture as part of the lecture series of the Arbeitskreis mediävistischer NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen of the University of Rostock

Historiographically, his relatively dense collection of facts is of particular importance, as it most likely served as an important basis for the first major comprehensive account of Rostock's city history by Johann Georg Wettken (written in 1716, published in 1754), before it was completely forgotten for centuries. The source is also of great linguistic interest. Generally written in High German, it contains a number of Low German interjections. Its orthography, especially the use of upper and lower case letters as well as hyphenation and contraction, is largely not standardized. The edition is therefore intended to be literal. It is accompanied by a commentary, mainly on contexts and backgrounds which, in view of the above-mentioned peculiarity of its author and his intentions, are missing in his text. A detailed glossary explains the Low German, foreign-language and now obsolete words. An index of persons and places allows appropriate access. For persons mentioned in the diary who lived in Rostock, their specific place of residence is given where possible.
