After three and a half years of research, the historians Dr. Michael Buddrus from the Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin and Angrit Lorenzen-Schmidt from the Geschichtswerkstatt Rostock e.V. have completed a biographical encyclopaedia of the doctors who worked in Mecklenburg from 1929 to the summer of 1945.
More than 2,300 physicians are portrayed, including registered, employed and civil servant physicians, hospital, company and military physicians as well as functionaries of the state medical bureaucracy, leaders of Nazi medical organizations, leaders of medical associations and medical professional organizations. Last but not least, the research group includes doctors who came to Mecklenburg as refugees or through service obligations and worked there.
The doctors' biographies are historically embedded and supplemented by detailed studies on medical policy and health conditions, the state of medical care and the state of health of the Mecklenburg population. The conditions in
Mecklenburg are always compared with those at the imperial level and the area of medical crimes is placed in the much larger field of normal medical activity.
The richly illustrated biographical encyclopaedia and the accompanying studies on medical history issues are based on previously untapped sources and are currently the most comprehensive project of its kind. There is no comparable publication for any other German federal state to date.
