Henry II, the Lion of Mecklenburg, married Anne of Saxe-Wittenberg in 1316 and the land of Stargard came into the hands of the Mecklenburgs.
Margrave Waldemar of Brandenburg then invaded the Stargard region with 7,000 men and devastated many places. Henry brought his wife Anna and her court to safety at Stargard Castle to organize the defence of Neubrandenburg.
Margrave Waldemar now wanted to take Anna of Saxony hostage at Stargard Castle. The Brandenburgers move in front of the castle and, as Henry and his knights are busy defending Neubrandenburg, expect the unprotected castle with Princess Anna to be easy prey.
They demand the surrender of the castle and the surrender of the princess. Anna of Saxe-Wittenberg appears on the palisade and lets the Brandenburgers know that she is prepared to defend the castle and her freedom even without her husband.
The enemies prepare to storm the castle in the hope of taking it by surprise. Through a secret passage, Anna manages to send a messenger to Neubrandenburg at the last moment. Will he get past the siege ring?
Will Anna pay dearly for her arrogance? Will she become a heroine or a martyr?
