Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 94 in G major Hob. I:94 Mit dem Paukenschlag
Edward Elgar: Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in E minor op. 85 / Enigma Variations on an Original Theme op. 36Raphaela Gromes, probably the most successful German cellist of our time (Rondo Magazine), is expected to be a special highlight at the Philharmonic season finale. Back in 2023, this exceptional artist enchanted around 3,000 listeners with her virtuoso, expressive and technically perfect playing at the annual Klassiknacht event at Rostock Zoo. In June 2025, she will return with Edward Elgar's famous cello concerto in her luggage - the last major orchestral work by the British composer with the passionate yet wistful tone. Written in 1919, it is a work of farewell and a look back at a time long gone.
Some 15 years earlier, Elgar's Enigma Variations had brought him much fame and earned him the Order of Merit, a title of nobility and honorary doctorates from eight universities. The 14 variation movements amusingly characterize people from his circle. However, the mystery behind the three-part theme should remain a secret. Chief conductor Marcus Bosch opens the evening with Haydn's fourth symphony, composed for London, which caused a sensation with its surprising timpani roll.
