To mark the 150th anniversary of Otto Tarnogrocki's birth, the Schwaan Art Museum is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to the artist.
Tarnogrocki was born on 06.06.1875 as the son of a rector and assistant preacher. He initially learned decorative painting. In 1893, he began his training at the art school in Berlin and transferred to the art school in Weimar in 1894. He came to Schwaan to study painting with Franz Bunke. He continued his studies with Carlos Grethe at the Stuttgart Academy. Study trips took him to Paris, where he worked at the Louvre and in the Colarossi studio. After the death of his father, he moved to Stettin with his mother in 1905. In 1923 he married Elisabeth Hoste. He maintained contact with Schwaan and was one of the co-founders of the Mecklenburg-Pomeranian Artists' Association. In 1944, his studio in Stettin was bombed out, destroying a large part of his artistic work. After the war, he and his wife moved to Nienhagen near Bad Doberan, where he died on December 17, 1946.
