Center of the former socialist model village Mestlin, listed as a building ensemble since 1977, nationally significant monument since 2011, currently voluntary commitment of the association Denkmal Kultur Mestlin e.V. for the preservation, renovation and use of the culture house and the building ensemble.
The Kulturhaus Mestlin can be seen from afar, a large hipped roof towers above all other buildings, only the church tower stretches its top a little higher, but can also only marvel at the size of the house. it forms the center of the former socialist model village of Mestlin, to which belong, in addition to numerous smaller residential blocks, the former crèche together with kindergarten, the school, several residential and commercial buildings on Marx- Engels-Platz and the former rural outpatient clinic. A sports field and a large park at the Kulturhaus complete the complex. Once life flourished here, in the only model village of the GDR, which was completely built in the 50s, today the community, to which the buildings were signed over by the state in the 90s, is struggling to survive. Since 2008, the association Denkmal Kultur Mestlin e.V. has been committed to the preservation, gradual restoration and, above all, use of the Kulturhaus, always with a view to the overall ensemble. For 10 years, the association has been organizing exhibitions and events, concerts, theater, readings, etc., working with local young people, acquiring funding and using it to gradually carry out the urgently needed renovation. Around 1 million euros have already been invested in the building, but there is still a lot to be done.
