Spa vacation for respiratory diseases in the coastal region

For those affected by respiratory diseases, the climatic conditions and natural remedies of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provide relief and sometimes even cure.

In specialized spa and rehabilitation clinics in health resorts in the country, individually tailored therapies bring relief from sleep disorders and diseases such as asthma, COPD, bronchitis, pneumonia, lung cancer or allergies. The natural pharmacy of the country provides healthy sea air, thermal brines and almost pollen-free forest air for a spa vacation. Scientifically based treatments, modernly equipped facilities and proven specialists ensure the medical-therapeutic success of a spa vacation in one of the 67 state-recognized spas and resorts in the state in the case of a respiratory disease.

Sun, wind and sea as therapy for respiratory diseases

The Baltic Sea region with its iodine-rich wind, salty water and many days of sunshine offers a special stimulating climate that speaks in favor of a successful spa vacation for respiratory diseases. In addition, the soothing effect of clean air with essential essences in the coastal forests is also beneficial for respiratory diseases. In order for this natural treasure chest to unfold its full effect, specialists have developed suitable therapies for sleep disorders, asthma, bronchitis, COPD and other respiratory diseases based on the healing powers of nature.

Thalasso

Thalasso treatment is considered an effective treatment method for respiratory diseases in spa vacations. "Thalasso" refers to the treatment of diseases with cold or heated sea water, sea air, algae, mud and sand. As a therapeutic medical treatment method under medical supervision, thalasso makes particular use of the health-promoting components of seawater. The coastal climate rounds off the beneficial effects," says MR Dr. med. Regina Schwanitz, spa physician in Warnemünde.

Climatic therapy

The Baltic Sea region with its natural components of sun, wind and sea offers the best conditions for health-promoting climatic therapy. One exposes oneself consciously to the mild stimulating climate at the coast. Elements of a climatic therapy are the climatic terrain cure, the fresh air lying cure and the heliotherapy. During walks, hikes and other activities with trained climatic therapists, positive effects can be achieved both in the case of respiratory diseases and in the preventive field.

Forest bathing

Exercise in the forest is good for the entire body. But forest bathing not only relaxes, but also allows you to breathe deeply thanks to pure air mixed with essential oils. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the first healing forests invite you to conscious excursions. Forest bathing is about enjoying carefree with all your senses - listening to the birds, smelling the forest air, seeing the diversity of life in the forest and, last but not least, feeling the soft forest floor under your feet. You don't necessarily have to exert yourself: Even a leisurely walk in the forest strengthens the immune system, relieves respiratory complaints and decelerates, among other things.

In good hands for respiratory diseases

Baltic resort Baabe - recognized as allergy-friendly

As an allergy sufferer, you are exposed to many risks and even often have to deal with respiratory diseases as a result of allergic reactions. Vacation in unknown surroundings? Usually a real risk for allergy sufferers. Not so in the Baltic resort of Baabe. In 2008, the community in the southeast of the island of Rügen was the first place in Germany to receive the "Allergy-Friendly Community" certificate from the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) and defended this title in 2015. What does this mean? Just under 300 beds in various accommodations meet the strict standards. These include, for example, smooth floors, encasing bedding and vacuum cleaners with HEPA 12/13 filters. In addition, some hosts offer allergy-suffering vacationers food that is especially suitable for allergy sufferers.

Thalasso in the seaside resort Warnemünde

The Thalasso offers in the seaside resort of Warnemünde are a pleasant way to combine wellness and therapy during a spa vacation. Facilities such as the certified original Thalasso center in the hotel "Neptun" are also open to interested day guests. Experienced therapists provide here with applications and courses for health in the sea climate. An individually tailored Thalasso cure has been proven to have a healing effect on respiratory diseases.

Waren (Müritz) spa center - healing thermal brine

The thermal brine of Waren bubbles up in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The therapy area of the spa center in the state-approved brine spa Waren an der Müritz can help prevent or alleviate respiratory diseases with brine inhalation, brine tub bath, brine floating pool or brine therapy pool. Waren's thermal brine bases its healing effect on components such as iodine, magnesium, hydrogen carbonate and calcium. This makes it suitable for treating almost all respiratory diseases, from chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma and chronic sinusitis to hay fever and sarcoidosis.

Interview with Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh

For respiratory diseases, a spa vacation in the mild stimulating climate of the Baltic Sea region can help, they say. Baltic Sea resorts offer thalasso and climatic therapies that can help relieve asthma, bronchitis or COPD, among other conditions. For years, Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh, Professor of Medical Climatology at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, has been involved in clinical studies on, among other things, the effect of climate therapy in various climatic areas, the development of indication-related spa and rehabilitation concepts, and scientific proof of therapeutic success. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, she supported the certification of health resorts as an expert and trains numerous climate therapists in the state every year. We spoke with her about the influence of the Baltic Sea and coastal climate on respiratory diseases and suitable forms of therapy.

Which climatic features of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can have a positive effect on respiratory diseases?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh: The entire region has immense possibilities and is very special in the combination of its climatic conditions. On the beaches, there is usually a salty breeze blowing from the sea. In addition, there are the coastal forests and the hinterland with lakes and large forest areas. Especially along the Baltic coast there is a really mild stimulating climate, which differs from that along the much harsher North Sea. The Baltic Sea climate is characterized by high humidity and slightly salty and - depending on the wind direction - clean air. This has a secretolytic effect on respiratory diseases. This means that mucus is loosened and can be coughed up. Another advantage of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is that there are forests in the immediate vicinity of the sea. Here you can avoid the wind if necessary and at the same time breathe in the healthy forest air. Basically, in the case of respiratory diseases, every change of climate to a stimulating climate brings positive effects anyway.

Keyword climate. What exactly is climate therapy?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh: Climatic therapy involves deliberate exposure to a stimulating climate. Climatic therapy consists of three elements: climatic terrain treatment, fresh air reclining treatment and heliotherapy. To achieve the desired effect, it is important to combine these forms of therapy individually according to the indication. Correctly dosed, physical training, targeted use of climatic factors, rest and accompanying physical-therapeutic measures bring success. Thalassotherapy further combines the elements of climatic therapy with the applications of the sea.

Can the effects of climatic therapy be scientifically proven?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh: Yes, numerous studies have shown that climatic therapy has a holistic effect on the entire organism. It not only alleviates respiratory diseases, but also promotes general health and the immune system. Its effectiveness has also been clearly proven for the individual climatic factors. The prerequisite for success, however, is that stress or stimulation phases and recovery or regeneration phases are planned according to the individual indication and implemented in the correct dosage. So anyone hoping for relief from respiratory complaints would be well advised to have a trained climate therapist at their side. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with its large number of certified seaside spas and resorts, there is a wide range on offer. By the way, climatic therapy is also demonstrably suitable for prevention in the area of cardiovascular or skin diseases, joint pain, obesity and many other indications. Last but not least, climate therapy reduces susceptibility to infections.

And who is on own initiative on the Baltic Sea on the way ...

Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh:... should take it slowly and give their body time to get used to the stimulating climate. To behave properly in the climate means in the cooler months: dress warmly and keep the nose-mouth-throat triangle and the feet warm. It is best to start with a short walk and protect yourself from the wind. Gradually, you can then dare to do more and even walk barefoot in the sand. Especially those who suffer from asthma or bronchitis with simultaneous pollen allergies should definitely decide to stay directly on the coast. If you have a severe respiratory disease and in late autumn or winter, the stimulus could be too strong, so then you are better off in the hinterland or switch to the forest climate, which compensates for the stimuli of the sea air.

Do you see healing forests as an effective therapeutic approach for respiratory diseases?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh: Forest therapy is on the rise, but it is still in its infancy throughout Germany and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Studies from Japan and other Asian countries show promising approaches. From my point of view, the concept "healing forest" offers a lot of potential, especially for respiratory diseases. The trees help to relieve the upper respiratory tract and bronchial tubes. Interesting therapy options will develop here in the future. We are also conducting research in this area in Munich.

Are there regional providers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with whom you have jointly developed spa and rehab concepts?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh: I have been working closely for years in the field of climatic therapy with the Ostsee-Kurklinik Fischland in Wustrow and the Hotel Neptun in Warnemünde. In addition, I regularly conduct advanced training courses for climate therapists and spa physicians in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, from which numerous spa and rehabilitation facilities in the state benefit. In addition, I advised the spa association on the development of the concept for the healing forests.

Effect of the mild stimulating climate in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Cure and rehabilitation measures for respiratory diseases usually combine components from conventional medicine, naturopathy, patient training, recreation and climatic therapy. Thus a cure vacation unfolds its effect on many different levels. The fact that the mild stimulating climate of the Baltic Sea region contributes to the recovery process for respiratory diseases, snoring or sleep disorders has been proven by several scientific studies. Climatologists, physicians and other scientists have been studying the effects of various climatic aspects on the human organism for decades and have been investigating healing climate zones - including the coastal regions on the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Studies commissioned by cost units also show that occupational absenteeism due to respiratory diseases decreased after inpatient treatment in seaside resorts. Corresponding recommendations also underscore the medical-therapeutic benefits of a spa vacation in the coastal region.

CONCEPT FOR INPATIENT REHABILITATION OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH THE INDICATION BRONCHIAL ASTHMA, ASSOCIATION OF GERMAN PENSION INSURANCE CARRIERS:

"Climatic therapy with low allergen and pollutant levels represents an integral part of the rehabilitation of bronchial asthma in childhood and adolescence, which in itself can result in an improvement of the clinical picture."

PROF. WOLFGANG MENGER, PNEUMOLOGIST:

"The beneficial effect of maritime aerosol is particularly noticeable at sea, when traveling in small ships. In children without bronchial asthma, for example, we found a 7 percent increase in respiratory burst compared to measurements taken indoors, and in boys of the same age with bronchial asthma, the increase was already 33 percent." Sample study "Telemetric studies to demonstrate the secretolytic effect of the surf zone in children with bronchial asthma."

Asthma: Breathing deeply by the sea works wonders

In Germany, around six million people suffer from asthma. This makes the disease one of the most common of all. For those affected and their relatives, it is a complete change, especially at the beginning of the diagnosis. Various sprays and inhalers become a constant companion and vital. Because if left untreated, the disease can be fatal in the worst case.

Take care of your health

Even mild hay fever can lead to asthma with increasing age - so it is important to listen to the warning signs of your own body and act early. But what to do when you can't breathe? Medications can provide relief, but do not combat the actual irritant, such as pollen and grasses. A trip to the Baltic Sea can work wonders here. The seawater is enriched with a high iodine, magnesium and salt content - especially respiratory diseases are alleviated. When the spray from the Baltic Sea splashes and the air is thus highly concentrated, even a relaxing walk comes very close to an inhalation. The airways are cleared and you can breathe deeply again. In addition, the wind blows mainly inland from the sea, so pollen and other irritants have little chance of affecting the patient.

Mild stimulating climate is good for asthma

In a mild climate, special climatic conditions come together to stimulate the body's overall activity. The immune system is stimulated and your body starts working against diseases. In medicine, this is referred to as a "healing factor" that sets in. For example, initial fits of coughing are replaced after a short time by an extensive dilation of the bronchial tubes. The stimulating climate includes strong winds, large temperature differences, UV radiation and, of course, the fresh sea air. This invigorates the lungs and mucous membranes and has a beneficial effect on your health.

Further information

From October to mid-March, you will find the purest air at the Baltic Sea. Many of the local clinics have adapted to the needs of hay fever, asthma and neurodermatitis patients. In addition, vacationers can relax with long walks on the beach and enjoy the unspoiled nature that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has to offer.
