Guided tour with Dr. Angela Pfennig | garden historian | Stralsund, participation: 7 euros
The Sundpromenade, an urban open space design from the time of the Weimar Republic and a historically significant example of green modernism, is one of the most popular walking routes in Stralsund and one of the most valued public garden spaces in the Hanseatic City of Stralsund due to its magnificent landscape, beautiful old trees and the fact that it is largely free of street noise.
With the simple, regular design of the promenade with squares in an architectural style that meet different recreational requirements and are connected by an avenue of lime trees, horticultural inspector Hans Winter (1895-1969) created a work of garden art in 1926/27 that is based on the beach promenade style of the large seaside resorts, but which is unique in its character as an urban park. Here, nature, gardens and architecture merge into a total work of art.
The Schillanlage - a gem of Stralsund garden culture - acts as a link in a grandiose landscape area between the Knieperteich pond and the banks of the Sound. It was restored a few years ago according to original plans from the 1920s and is particularly enchanting with its rich, seasonally changing floral decorations.
The garden history walk leads from the Schill monument through the Schill grounds and along the Sund promenade to the lido.
