In times in which the tradition of figurative sculpture has more or less been torn down and tendencies towards abstraction predominate, the human being is at the center of Richard Hess' work. His powerful female bodies are the epitome of the living. With 724 sculptural works, 144 of them in public spaces, the Berlin-born artist is one of the most important figurative sculptors of the post-war period. As a precise observer of his fellow human beings, his sculptures are characterized by realistic sensuality.
Richard Hess's image of man is formed out of compassion. His sitting, standing and reclining figures - bodies in outward repose - bear the dignity of the ordinary. They seem to be at home in the stillness of their own aura.
