Perspectives of a project at Wismar University of Applied Sciences

Perspectives of a Wismar University of Applied Sciences project

The building complex of the former post office with its associated outbuildings and the adjacent open spaces has been partially vacant for years and is an example of the effects of the division of Waren's city center by the railroad line and the Schweriner Damm. This location has hampered the development of the area in the past, but at the same time offers great potential for future utilization concepts.

The exhibition "Neues für die Alte Post in Waren (Müritz)" shows approaches for the further development of the listed building and the adjacent areas, which were developed by architecture students at the Faculty of Design at Wismar University of Applied Sciences in the winter semester 2023 - 2024.There were no binding specifications in favor of the widest possible range of ideas for the Alte Post site. Furthermore, partial aspects such as economic efficiency, ownership, building planning and building regulations were deliberately ignored.

The students' contributions are not to be understood as fully developed proposals, but rather as a starting point for finding ideas on how the Alte Post could develop in the future. A direct transferability of the results of the conceptual investigations into reality is therefore neither given nor intended.

This project was made possible in part thanks to the support of the staff from the urban planning/economic development/building law department. Diana Lucas-Drogan, the former head of this department, contributed her expertise throughout the process right up to the final presentation.

The project was particularly supported on site by the WerkHausWaren e.V. association, whose initiative gave the vacant building the attention it deserved.

The owner of the property gave the opportunity to view it and agreed to develop ideas for this building and this task. The students were able to inspect the files at the lower monument authority and the city archives.
