The well-preserved baroque castle complex in Griebenow is considered an architectural masterpiece of great cultural and historical value, especially in the context of Sweden's past.
Originally founded by the Cistercian monastery of Eldena, the village was first mentioned in a document in 1248 as a Slavic settlement in connection with the confirmation of the monastery's ownership by Duke Wartislaw III.
From 1630 to 1815, Griebenow was under Swedish rule as a result of the occupation of Pomerania after the Thirty Years' War. The success of Gerd Anton Keffenbrink, who was given the aristocratic title of Rehnschiöld, had a decisive influence on this period. Under his leadership, significant building work was carried out at the castle, including the construction of a unique castle chapel in the 15-cornered central building.
A new pleasure garden was laid out in 1706, and between 1707 and 1709 the dilapidated walls were demolished and replaced by a representative palace. Today, this castle is one of the most important architectural testimonies to the Swedish period in northern Germany.
The estate has been redesigned and renovated several times over the years, and the castle now serves as a cultural center and attraction for visitors. The association "Barockschloss zu Griebenow e.V." has set itself the goal of preserving and maintaining the historical heritage of the Swedish past in keeping with its style. The castle and park have been undergoing extensive renovation since 2019.
