DE BÄR - a play by Anton Chekhov in Low German and with music. 13 cheerful performances on the meadow in front of the farmhouse in the open-air museum Mueß.
Comedy in one act based on Anton Chekhov with music. Season June 24 through July 15, 2023.
"Dat is equality. Emancipation is dat! No difference between man and woman. Ut Prinzip scheit ick ehr öwern Hupen!"
Landowner Elsa mourns with passion for her husband, who died months ago, and resolves never to leave the house again until her own death. But when the uncouth retired lieutenant-at-arms Gregor von Seydel shows up and asks for the money her husband still owed him, the peace on the farm is over. The dispute over which sex is more mendacious and false escalates into an armed duel. The fire between the two thick skulls has actually already been lit for a long time.
In his comedy The Bear, which is in the same series as the one-act plays The Proposal and The Wedding, Anton Chekhov draws an unvarnished view of reality with the greatest possible simplicity and without judgment, which inevitably leads to laughter. The Mueß Open-Air Museum provides a perfect backdrop for the play set in the 19th century, which Chekhov himself described as a "joke," and invites you outdoors for a summer evening of good humor.
