Organ and live electronics in dialog
"It should not be called Bach, but the sea!" Beethoven's famous bon mot exactly describes the ten concerts that are particularly inspired by the work of Johann Sebastian Bach this festival summer.
The first three notes sound on the organ and everyone immediately recognizes this piece: Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Hardly any other beginning has been quoted as often as these first bars of the Toccata, which stand for sacred dignity and perhaps also a slight shudder. This evening, too, they are not missing when Kaan Bulak, the German-Turkish specialist in sound studies, creates fascinating sound paintings for organ and electronics together with the accomplished Essen cathedral organist and festival prizewinner Sebastian Küchler-Blessing, situated somewhere between composition and improvisation.
