India - An emerging world power?

India will overtake China as the world's most populous country in 2023. The South Asian giant is also becoming increasingly important economically and militarily, not least in light of current global crises. Despite this, India has by no means played the influential role in international politics that one might expect from a country of its size and importance. For a long time, New Delhi stood in its own way and made serious miscalculations that ensured that India largely remained a "prevented great power" in the 20th century. Can India become a real world power in the 21st century alongside and between China and the USA?

The seminar aims to approach this question from different perspectives. In addition to India's political, economic and social development, the focus will be on the country's relations with the People's Republic of China and the United States. India's relationship with China is historically fraught, characterized by deep mistrust and at the same time by a peculiar dynamic of conflict, competition and cooperation. India's relations with the USA are also complicated - the much-invoked "natural partnership" between "the oldest and the largest democracy" in the world has so far only begun to manifest itself. India's position in the Sino-American rivalry may be of decisive importance, not only for the future of South Asia, but for the whole world.
