A visual and sonorous presentation in the Müritzeum, because the song of the hayhoppers in April already makes you think of a balmy summer night in the meadow.
Grasshoppers are not only very familiar to most people due to their song, their typical appearance and their ability to hop, but - in contrast to many other insects and especially spiders - they are arthropods that are not met with rejection from the outset. There are also numerous interesting historical and cultural aspects, such as the arrival of locust swarms in Mecklenburg or the background to some of their peculiar folk names.
On Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 7:30 pm, Dr. Wolfgang Wranik will introduce the guests of the Müritzeum to the world of native grasshoppers - or as we also say here: Heuhüpper.
The grasshopper fauna of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern currently includes 51 species. They play an important role in the ecosystem. Some of them are highly specialized, limited in their occurrence to particular locations and have a relatively high degree of endangerment. They are therefore of great importance for analyses and assessments in nature conservation and for environmentally relevant planning.
In the lecture, the most common and particularly interesting species are presented with pictures, videos and examples of songs. The speaker will also provide suggestions for your own observations in your garden or living environment, as hayhawks can be found almost everywhere.
Dr. Wolfgang Wranik was a marine biologist at the University of Rostock, but has also been an entomological leisure researcher since his school days. He is currently involved in the revision of the Red List of grasshoppers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The lecture is free of charge, the Müritzeum is happy to receive a donation.
