Elise Crola, née Fränkel, came from one of the most influential Berlin banking families of her time. She grew up in the immediate vicinity of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The artistically gifted girl, who was supported by the best teachers of the time, married the much older Baron von Weyer against her father's wishes. This marriage is divorced at her father's insistence. Unhappy, Elise leaves Berlin and retreats to Ilsenburg in the Harz Mountains. There she meets Georg Heinrich Crola, a passionate landscape painter and pupil of Caspar David Friedrich. Kristin Giertler and Thomas Kornmann give these two almost forgotten artistic personalities a voice of their own beyond their pictorial work. They also allow other contemporaries such as Caspar David Friedrich, Wilhelm Schadow, Heinrich Heine and Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn to have their say. Biographical and fictional texts provide a wide range of insights into the emotional and intellectual world of the 19th century.
