Exhibition opening: Cosima Hawemann. PENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

For the first time in north-east Germany, the Kunstsammlung Neubrandenburg is showing works by Cosima Hawemann in an extensive solo exhibition. Her title "PENTIMENTAL JOURNEY" refers to the word pentimenti, which describes the traces of the struggle for the final pictorial expression through overdrawing, corrections etc.. Hawemann transfers photographic source images by overpainting them into a combination of the representational and the abstract. Her expressive paintings convey a romantic, enigmatic and enigmatically suggestive atmosphere.
For this solo exhibition, Cosima Hawemann has created a new series of works on the 1000-year-old oaks of Ivenack, the oldest oaks in Europe. This series deals with the epoch of Romanticism, Caspar David Friedrich and the current trend of "black Romanticism".
Cosima Hawemann studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Professors Jörg Immendorff and Helmut Federle. She is a master student of A. R. Penck and completed her studies with a diploma from the academy. She lives and works in Cologne.
