Why is the corner pub important for a functioning democracy? - Sociologist and author Rainald Manthe is a guest at the Ping Pong Salon and presents his new book "Demokratie fehlt Begegnung" ("Democracy lacks encounters").
The rise of populist and anti-democratic parties indicates that a not insignificant proportion of people consider basic democratic principles to be negotiable. Why is this the case? - One possible reason is the dwindling sense of togetherness, increasing social isolation and a feeling of not belonging. And the lack of a broadband connection is not always the only cause. Not all the challenges of our time can be solved technologically. We also need more analog spaces where people can simply be - without the expectation of consumption, without an agenda. Places for everyday interaction, from the playground to the library to the corner pub. Places where people come together who may not have the same opinions or lifestyles, but who share this democracy. Analog spaces create the all-important "glue" that holds societies together. Where they are lacking, understanding and tolerance for one another dwindle - and in the worst case, trust in democracy also dwindles.
In his book "Demokratie fehlt Begegnung", sociologist Rainald Manthe has vividly described these connections. On February 20, he will be a guest at the Ping Pong Salon to discuss the contents of the book. The evening will be hosted by Miro Welcker and Katja Thiede. Admission is free of charge. For planning purposes, the organizers ask you to register via the Ping Pong Salon website, if possible.
