Naturally Romantic

Selected Romantic choral literature from Germany and Denmark, works for string ensemble, recitation of important poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, Heinrich Heine, Achim von Arnim et al.

The Romantic era finds its artistic expression in painting and Caspar David Friedrich is its outstanding protagonist. His stock of motifs, moods and colors is also echoed in the works of Romantic poets such as Joseph von Eichendorff, Clemens Brentano, Heinrich Heine, Heinrich von Kleist, Novalis and others. Central themes are the night, loneliness, nature, the ego in connection with the infinite, the desire to recall the old. Romantic composers, in turn, clothed these motifs in sound. Eichendorff's "Moonlit Night", for example, is a poem that has been set to music in many different ways to this day. Works such as "Abschied" (O Täler weit, o Höhen), the song "In einem kühlen Grunde" and Brahms' "Vineta" are just a few examples from a remarkable flood of compositions with different vocal combinations and instrumentation. The "Colors of Romanticism" concert takes up this treasure and, by combining images of the most famous son of the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald with choral and instrumental sound, poetry and light, will present this diversity to the audience and make it an experience in different ways. The choir of St. Spiritus, the successful chamber choir Late Night Singers, the associated male ensemble "Meine Herren!" (all under the direction of music director Dr. Sigrid Biffar) and the young women's choir "Chorda filiarum" (director: Rebekka Fricke) will present famous choral works from the Romantic period and settings of Romantic texts. The choirs will present enchanting compositions with their different sound characteristics, including works by Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Brahms, Schumann as well as from Denmark (Gade) and Dresden (Lotti), important stations in the life of Caspar David Friedrich. Anette Gerhardt from Theater Vorpommern will recite outstanding poetry from the era, while the Vorpommern String Ensemble will play selected instrumental music.
